We saw numerous structures put up by both the ancestral puebloan culture as well as the Navajo. Some of the structures date from AD. Many pottery shards are scattered near the sites, so watch your footing. You are allowed to pick up pottery shards and arrowheads as long as you put them back exactly as you found them. We arrived at the primitive camping area in the early evening and set up camp. Afterwards, we took a short walk out to Crack in the Rock. The multi-roomed site is on top of a mesa, with good views of the surrounding area, including the Little Colorado river.
There are some fine petroglyphs to enjoy at this location as well. The rangers will instruct you not to touch the site walls or the petroglyphs in order to keep them pristine. They are quite fragile. After dinner and a good night sleep under the stars, we broke camp and hiked to two other sites nearby to Crack in the Rock.
These sites had rooms, but significantly more rock art to enjoy. Most of the morning was spent here. In the late morning, we started the long walk back to the trailhead start. While temperatures are inconsistent from one day to the next, a degree difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures is generally the rule. Expect windy conditions which can often make balancing a heavy pack difficult. Level of Difficulty This hike is strenuous. Travel is over challenging terrain; there are no trails. This is high desert country so no water is available at the campsite or along the way. Each hiker must carry a minimum of one gallon of water per person per day.
Therefore, an empty pack will weigh a minimum of 16 pounds 8 pounds per gallon , plus the weight of the pack. After figuring in food, stove, tent, sleeping pad, and other needed equipment, a full pack can easily weigh 30 or 40 pounds or more.
All hike participants must have the physical ability to hike in extreme temperatures over difficult terrain, and be able to carry their full pack for the complete duration of 16 miles. Group size is limited to 15 people, including staff. Hikes are led up to four weekends in April and four weekends in October. Because the group size is small, and demand high, a lottery is held to select participants. Applications are taken via an online form which will be posted at that time.
