I just expected the various COM ports to be displayed in Device Manager as they have been on most other computers or laptops I have used? What does your manual or the cable's website installation instructions say?
In looking at a few cables, they all say with Vista or Windows 7, make sure nothing is connected to the RS connector, then plug the USB end to the computer. Windows 7 should see it, and install the proper driver for you. Then you should see it in Device Manager.
And from there, you can follow the instructions to install the RS device. Thank you for that I will try in the morning when the solar system wakes up it's pm here now. Let's hope by plugging it in it recognises it but I have a feeling it's going to come up with something like no COM port 1 or Thank you for your help and I will report back tomorrow. Sounds like a plan but do note, from what I am reading, it is important to connect just the cable to the computer first - that is make sure the RS end has nothing attached.

You may refer to the computer or device manufacturer website and install the latest drivers for chipset and check if it helps. Device manufacturers often release updates to their drivers to enhance performance or fix compatibility issues. Update a driver for hardware that isn't working properly. Does the connector works on a different computer? I think the problems are a function of the edition of Windows 7 build number and the Lenovo XT that I'm trying to run it on plus minimal windows updates. I have swapped a predecessor machine to Lenovo, due to previous file corruptions.
I have never had to reload an OS in 35 years of messing with PCs, yet I"m looking at "one more time" on top of three previous reloads, to attempt to salvage the machine. Since I already bought NIB replacements, that's not as urgent as it once was.
I've also worked around my absolute need for a modem in the virtual machine. I've only run branded apps on this machine never got to the point were anything else could be tried and except for downloading Microsoft updates which I've been very careful with since they could also be responsible for the problems I haven't stressed or taken anything that might remotely be considered as "chancy" with the package.
